Waking up to the scent of freshly brewed coffee is an indispensable part of practically every household the world over. For obvious reasons, nobody sings praises about the aroma of tea although there are innumerable tea drinkers. Coffee lovers have a fondness for their coffee that cannot be aptly described. If you consider the number of cafes and coffee shopes coming up everywhere, and the ever expanding menu, even ordering a simple coffee can be a formidable task.
You must be familiar with the names of the different types of coffee that are given on the menu but not too familiar with what goes into each coffee. Many people are not keen to try anything new and stick to the first brew they like and find themselves with the same coffee all the time. Each coffee has its own unique taste and you should try out new concoctions each time as you might find some other coffee that is richer and tastier.
The Espresso and the Turkish Coffee are very strong black coffee with no milk or cream. Café au Lait is double strength coffee with heated milk while Café Latte is Espresso with coffee flavoured syrup and milk. Irish Coffee is laced with whiskey and topped with whipped cream and the Machiato is Espresso with a dash of aerated milk. Cappuccino is Espresso with a little milk, and spices sprinkled on top. Café Mocha is not what you can term ‘real coffee’ as it is made of instant coffee, cocoa, and chocolate syrup with a little milk. Iced Coffee made of Espresso, a dash of whipped cream, and crushed ice finds favour even in the eyes of the most ardent fan of hot coffee.
There are basically two types of coffee beans; the Arabica and the Robusta. The rich aroma and flavour of the Arabica makes it more favoured and expensive. Instant coffee is usually produced from the Robusta beans because of the cost factor. If you are a ‘real’ coffee conoisseur, you will know that the best coffee is the one that is made with freshly roasted and ground coffee beans. The way the coffee bean is roasted also influences the final flavour of the coffee. Use freshly roasted bean only after a day after it is roasted to obtain the best flavour. It may be stored for a couple of weeks in an airtight glass container.
Many health risks are said to be reduced with regular intake of coffee, like tooth decay, gall stones, gout, incidence of cancer, Alzheimer’s, and dementia to name the prominent ones. It also acts as a laxative and as a diuretic, and guards the heart and liver. The adverse effects are anxiety, staining of teeth, increase in blood pressure, and not advised during pregnancy. According to research, women are seen to benefit more from drinking coffee than men. Moderate intake of coffee is definitely beneficial to health.
Coffee was first harvested in the Ethiopian highlands as early as the fifteenth century. But it was only the last century that saw coffee cultivated in Australia. Australian coffee cultivation became truly viable only with the introduction of mechanical harvesting in the 1980s. The coffee growing areas in Australia are northern parts of Queensland and New South Wales.
Half of the 200 to 600 tonnes of coffee produced in Australia is exported. Although Australian coffee is labeled as entirely organic, increased use of pesticides in coffee plantations, make it a dubious claim.
The most expensive coffee in the world comes from Indonesia and some parts of Philippines and East Timor. Kopi Luvak, Motit Coffee, Kafe Laku, and Kape Alamid are some of its more common names. It is also called Weasel Coffee in Vietnam where a chemically stimulated version of the coffee is produced. The Asian Palm Civet plays a role in the production of this coffee; it eats the coffee berry with the bean, which passes through the intestines and is passed out undigested in its original shape. These beans are then gathered, washed, dried, and then roasted lightly to produce the least bitter and most aromatic coffee in the world. The price per kilogram of Kopi Luvak is around US $700!
Although making your own steaming mug of coffee has its plus points, it is not always feasible. You will agree that sipping an exotically brewed coffee in your favourite café, with your book or a good friend for company, offers a much more pleasurable experience.
