Pakistan: Lahore Food Street fever returns

To the delight of food lovers, not only in Lahore but across Pakistan, Lahore’s famous Food Street is set to open once again

According to local authorities, the Food Street, more commonly known as Gawalmandi would be setup near Fort road and could open for food lovers within three months.

The new Food Street would be set in the midst of historic landmarks, like Lahore Fort; Badshahi Mosque; and Tibbi Gali; the project is currently in the planning phase.

The Food Street met a tragic end in 2009, when the government decided to close it down on the pretext of causing inconvenience to the area residents. However, shopkeepers rejected this stance and believed that the decision was politically motivated. The closure was also a loss to the city’s cultural heritage and tourism.

However, the government has decided to undertake the project once again in view of the utter disappointment expressed by the public. The new Food Street would comprise of about 27 buildings around the Roshnai Gate. The street would remain open throughout the night and will not have any entry or exit gates.

After finalizing the plan, the city government and local authorities would decide on operational aspects of the venture. The government also intends to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the Food Street through a nearby grid station or generators. Green belts, electric poles and decorative lights would also be installed in areas around the street.

However, some skepticism has also been expressed about the project. These critics believe that most buildings in the area are owned by multinationals or allies of the government. Hence, it is actually these people, instead of the locals that would enjoy greater benefits from the new Food Street.
