Grains are one of the most important staple foods in the world with a long history dating back to Stone Age Man. To the Romans they were such a vital food that they thought they were a gift from the Goddess Ceres, hence the name cereals. In general, wholegrains are a rich source of carbohydrates, B vitamins, vitamin E, iron, zinc, magnesium, and fibre. When mixed with vegetables, fruit, nuts, pulses and so on, they form a valuable part of a balanced diet.
