A Chinese meal has no main dish. Instead there are several dishes, all equally important. Rice acts as the filler and is complemented by a vegetable dish, a meat dish, a fish dish and a soup. It must be borne in mind that the Chinese do not favor huge chunks of meat but thin, tender slices which form a small proportion of the meal compared to Western standards.
