Two weeks from now is the local fair. I perfectly love going to the fair. As soon as I arrive, I enjoy taking a perambulation around the whole setup just to see if there are any new surprises. I also stop by the information center to get the lineup for the major venues and show areas. I never neglect to grab some handmade donuts for breakfast first thing, too. Then I direct my steps in the direction of my favorite exhibit–the honey house. There’s just something about the smell of beeswax, the smell of honey, and the activity of the bees themselves that makes it so that I never get tired of going, in spite of the fact that the exhibit is Basically the same each time. I usually purchase a handful of flavored honey sticks to have right away, plus some specialty honey and candles to take home. It’s also fun to watch the visitors roll their own beeswax candles.
For the rest of the day, I loosely break up my time between checking out various events and competitions and meeting up with friends and neighbors who are there with their farm products. Lunch is always the same –a baked tater with all the toppings. I barely ever go on any of the rides. An unfortunate childhood experience ended my enjoyment of that particular part of the fair. Then at nighttime I find a new and interesting meal to eat for supper, meet some friends and find a comfy seat to listen to a band. Every year I go to the fair on at least a couple of days. Maybe I’m crazy, but I sure have a lot of fun.
My love for the fair led me to volunteer this year to help out with one of the children’s events. It’s just a small thing, not ambitious at all, but I think they’ll enjoy it. There will be tables set up with nothing but wooden boards of varying sizes, wooden toy wheels, dowels, some of these and all sorts of supplies and tools for attaching them to each other –nails, screws, glue, tape, axles, and random pieces of hardware. The children will have an hour to put their creativity to work and create whatever they can come up with. We’ll judge their products in several categories–most useful, most inventive, sturdiest design, etc.
I can’t wait to see how it goes. My plan is to start volunteering every year, to add something to the community during an event that gives me so much pleasure. Perhaps I’ll also learn to can fruit or bake pies so that I can enter one of thosecompetitions and really get into the spirit of things. I really think I was meant to live at least two generations ago.
