In the United States and Canada, goulash is often prepared using lots of tomatoes with hamburger meat, and then served on top of macaroni or noodles – resulting in a dish that rather resembles Italian pasta dishes. Thus, if you have ever eaten the North American version of goulash, you may be very surprised to learn that the Hungarian version of the dish as actually prepared as a soup rather than a stew.
